Art in the Wood
David Bradshaw Wood Sculptor
I am a sculptor, creating abstract, contemporary, fine wood sculpture in my studio in Treragin Wood near Cotehele House, Cornwall. In the gnarly, twisted, damaged wood others reject even as firewood I find graceful flowing forms. Where others see faults I see features which become the start point for my highly individual sculpture.
The process begins with a rough log, peeling off the bark reveals what it inside rather like unwrapping a present. At this stage I take time to really look at what I have to work with; what does it suggest? Then I begin to rough out the form I find, refining the shape as I go, using finer and finer tools until I feel I have freed the initial form. I like a fine silky finish to my work, running my hands over the surface to discover any imperfections which I remove. Once I can no longer feel any inconsistencies the piece is finished.
Commissions
I am happy to undertake site specific commissions. I need to visit the site and talk with potential clients to ascertain what is required, I will then find suitable wood, design, carve and install the work.
If you have a piece of wood you wish to have carved, please contact me to see if it is suitable. If so I will find what is within the wood and draw it out.
